Apple & Google Wallet cards, explained

The difference between a loyalty card that gathers dust and one that drives daily repeat visits comes down to five small decisions. Here's the playbook we give every new café, salon and shop.

Most small businesses already know loyalty matters. The hard part isn't the idea—it's launching something customers actually pull out at the counter. After helping thousands of UK businesses get started, we've found the programs that work all share the same five foundations.

1. Pick one clear reward

The fastest way to confuse a customer is to offer too much. A single, obvious reward—"buy 9 coffees, get the 10th free"—beats a complicated points matrix every time.

2. Make joining effortless

Every extra step loses people. With digital wallet cards there's no app to download and no form to fill in at the till—customers scan a QR code and the card lands in Apple or Google Wallet in one tap.

3. Give a reason to come back this week

A loyalty card is permission to message customers—use it. A well-timed push notification does what email can't: it lands on the lock screen and gets opened.

4. Watch the right numbers

Three numbers tell you almost everything: how many customers joined, how often members return versus non-members, and which rewards get redeemed.

5. Keep it yours

Your loyalty card is a brand touchpoint customers see every week. Use your logo, your colours and your tone of voice.
